Last Sunday night Bedford County Tech Team was called out to a park in town to look for 2 boys that were last seen at 10am that morning walking along the Duck River headed for a locally known cave. Upon arriving I was told that the boys (one 14 yrs old & the other 19 yrs old with medical history)were planning on doing some exploring in a cave a few miles down the river. We were told that all the boys close friends & family members had been called & nobody had heard from them. They wwere suppose to be back at the pick up spot by dark & it was now 2 hrs past with no sign of them. We were told that the boys had taken a long rope with them & a lantarn with them as there only light source. We were told the boys were planning on wading across the river in a shallow spot to reach the other side where the cave was. It was decided by IC that I would take a swift water rescue boat & 2 other team mebers down the the river to the cave site. If we did not encounter the boys before arriving at the cave we were to go in & check the cave to see if the boys were still in there. If not found we were to procide down the river to our take point. I had never been to the cave before but was told that it only went a few hundred ft. IC also sent other teams out at different points along the river where there was access availible. There was also a team sent out to see if there was access to be gained from land & to search the cave if we did not beat them there. All went good accept we never found the boys. It was later found out that they had left the river & called a family member to come pick them up. Why this family member was never called by the parents before the search was started is unknown. Atleast the boys were safe & I got to play alittle in the water & cave ;D

Pretty cool. 3 YRS ago we got a call out( Bedford County Tech Team) about 11pm one night to rescue a coon hound that chased a coon right off the top of a local active Rock Quarry. The owners told us the Quarry was about 250 ft from top to bottom but the coon hound was stuck on a small ledge about 45 ft from the top. We made the long trek around to the top of the Quarry & found where the coon dog went off. After checking the ledge with our light we could see that the coon was not still on the ledge. Boy did he have a bad day We dropped 2 ropes & sent a guy over the edge down to the ledge with some webbing to make a dog harness. The rescuer stayed on rope tied off the whole time for sftey purposes. We then hauled the coon hound up with the other rope. Boy was that one happy coon hunter we got his dog to the top . Good thing was we could not find injurys on him.

Good to hear that all was well in the end.
I wanted to talk to Frank about it the other day while we were in Raus cave but never got a chance .
I don't think you ever practice to much when it comes to change overs & self rescue tech.

Really a great thing.

My favorite cave is Shipman Creek Cave and a neighbor owned it. When I was just a wisp of a girl it was my first cave and so many a hot summer day was spent the in mouth of that cave as a child. ;D Well at least until the neighbor made me go home. Being my first, maybe that cave is just sentimental to me instead of a favorite. I should ponder the question, What's Your Favorite Cave? a bit longer and get back to you. That wouldn't be the Great Nut cave would it? Rippy Ridge would have to be mine.
