Act 19-762: Grants Executive Steering Committee past 7/8/04

The Grants Executive Steering Committee is established in the Department of the President. Two of the committee members will be NSS Board of Governors members appointed by the President. The Steering Committee is responsible for leading and managing the NSS grants program, but not responsible for writing proposals or grants. They will encourage and facilitate effective grant proposals from NSS Committee Chairmen and the NSS Board of Governors and act as the clearinghouse for proposals. The Committee is responsible for prioritizing proposals for the Grants Committee, reviewing the grant applications before they are submitted, and approving the obligations associated with the grant before it is accepted by the NSS.

Discussion: The act in principle is good, but has not functioned as proposed. Efforts to obtain two board members to serve on the committee have not succeeded, and a volunteer to chair the committee has not been found. We now have a Grant committee chairperson with grant writing experience and knowledge of the Society, and it’s functioning. I suggest that the officers and directors should take the responsibility of providing ideas and background for potential grants to the Grant writing committee.

I'm I reading this right?? Is Bill proposing to do away with this committee?

With the all the NSS money crunch publicity - surely they wouldn't do away with the

Hey guys, you might be thinking this is the grant writing committee that actually writes the grants. This committee is relatively new. It was created and passed at the July 2005 BOG Meeting:

27. Grants Executive Steering Committee

This committee was never staffed as far as I can determine.


The Grant Writing Committee hadn't had a chair in over a year with apparently no one interested in chairing the committee. Oddly enough at the March 2006 BOG Meeting a regular NSS member who had served on the Grant committee stepped up and volunteered to chair the committee, but the directors substituted one of their own for the position. From the minutes:

31C) Tozer moved: Tom Hagood, NSS 41730, e-mail [e-mail] is confirmed as Chairman of the Grants Writing Committee.
