National cave institute in New Mexico to build visitor centerFosters Daily Democrat New Hampshire November 28, 2008 CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) The National Cave and Karst Research Institute has broken ground on a visitors center, library and other research facilities dedicated to cave conservation and management. The new facilities will be located at the institute's headquarters in Carlsbad. Construction will take about a year. In the meantime, the institute is continuing fundraising efforts to equip its laboratories, library and other facilities. "We are about to have a beautiful building, but we do not have the contents for the building," said Penelope Boston, associate director of academics for the institute and a professor in the cave and karst program at New Mexico Tech, which operates the institute as a nonprofit corporation.
