To Be a National Geographic Photographer Tuesday, October 7, 2008 | Posted by albanna at 4:58 PM | Michael "Nick" Nichols, 52, National Geographic photographer. Here's the entire interview: Nick Nichols, uncut. As told to Kalee Thompson Veteran National Geographic photographer Nick Nichols. Talent is a given, but it has to be said that everything else counts for about 99 percent of success. I mean, you've got to have the talent, but then you've got to be able to sell yourself, you have to be focused, you have to be able to take rejections, you have to deal with cultures, deal with places. You have to be able to sleep anywhere, eat anything, and not be afraid of disease. albanna-photojournalist.blogspot.com/2008/10/to-be-national-geographic-photographer.html

Nick is one of only a handful of full time Nat Geo photogs on staff. They have since gone away from hiring full time staff rather opting for cheaper freelance artists to get the job done. If I remember correctly, Nick got his start photographing Tilted Well and the main borehole in Run to the Mill Cave. bob biddix Innermost Imagery www.innermostimagery.com
