Bat Cave 'rescue' turns out to be false alarmFrom KTVZ.COM news sources Two teens who visited Bat Cave southeast of Bend Friday afternoon and whose pickup got stuck as they left saw the cave's small entrance, thought a cave-in may have occurred and feared some people might be trapped inside. But their precautionary call to 911, which brought numerous officials to the scene, turned out to be a false alarm, authorities said. Jocelyn Moore, 16, and Carissa Moore (no relation), 15, both Bend-area residents, made a cell phone call to Deschutes County 911 dispatchers around 2:45 p.m. about the possible cave-in, fearing up to seven people might have been trapped, said sheriff's Cpl. Neil Mackey. Units from the sheriff's office, Sheriff's Search and Rescue, Bend Fire and Rescue and the U.S. Forest Service all responded to the area, off China Hat Road, Mackey said. While emergency units were still arriving and trying to get information, cave visitor Robert Vanelverdinghe, 45, of Dallas,, Ore., and six other members of his party returned to the above-ground entrance, having come out of the cave from a separate exit, Mackey said. He confirmed everyone was accounted for, and they had not seen or heard anyone else in the cave, or any signs of a cave-in - and indeed, a check of the area turned up no signs of one. Full Article

I love Bend, Oregon. Probably the best small town in the Pacific NW.
