Although this is not an “official” NCRC Cave Rescue Orientation Course (OCR) it is a GREAT class! You get more than the typical OCR with the HCRU class.
I’ve been an instructor at the HCRU class for most of the 20 or so class that have been conducted. The HCRU class was developed along the lines of the NCRC - OCR class, but with additional material that is well suited for the TAG area caver. One of the major differences is the introduction to SRT and rope rescue in the HCRU class. Friday night starts off with a complete overview of hardware and equipment followed by basic introduction to SRT. Saturday is a full day of lectures and hands-on practices that concludes with basic haul & lower systems. On Sunday the students finds themselves in the field working closely with members of the HCRU on vertical rope skills. In the afternoon the weekend culminates with a mini-mock cave rescue!
By no means does this class attempt to make the student a proficient rope rescue specialists or a “qualified” caver rescue expert. But if you have ever wondered what all of this cave rescue thing is about, this is the class for you!
