Man spends 46 days alone tramping the Central Mountain RangeMountaineer Huang Weiqing had something to prove. He wanted to show people all over the world that Taiwan's high mountains could be a travel destination, so he spent 46 days walking from one end of the Central Mountain Range to the other. Not only did he eschew all outside support, he also set a new record for Taiwanese alpine activity. Huang does not feel overly proud with his achievement, however, and dedicates his time to lecturing in an effort to spread correct information about mountain climbing and ecology. Huang's long march took place the year before last, beginning on April 25, and wrapped up on June 9. Huang said that he stayed out in the forests for so long all alone because only by going far from civilization could he get away from its distractions, and he needed a long time to be able to really settle his spirit.
