E. Coli Update Date: November 9, 2006 Contact: Vickie Carson, (270)758-2192 Historic tour area of Mammoth Cave remains closed this weekend Testing continues to determine cause of E.coli spike (MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – November 9, 2006) Some cave tours will remain closed through the coming weekend as park staff construct a temporary awning at the Historic Entrance of Mammoth Cave to shield visitors from dripping water. This water has recently been shown to contain levels of E.coli that exceed recreational water public health standards. The Frozen Niagara, Travertine, and Wild Cave tours are open. “We will remain cautious,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed. “It’s going to take some period of time to understand where the contamination is coming from, and what caused the spike in fecal coliform and E.coli last week. The Historic section of the cave will remain closed this weekend as we build a shelter across the steps.” Full News Release
