Incumbent Kuhn seeks sensible solutions Charles City Press (Iowa) Published: Wednesday, November 1, 2006 8:30 AM CST
The district I represent is comprised of some of the most sensitive environmental characteristics in the state of Iowa. Karst terrain and an abundance of sinkholes provide a direct conduit to our precious drinking water. Yet, under current Iowa law an unformed manure storage structure (a lagoon) can still be constructed on Karst terrain without so much as a monitoring well to detect if its leaking. Citizens from other parts of the state have concerns about locating large-scale livestock operations near tourism attractions and recreational venues.
The state needs to maintain and expand our livestock industry to improve our agricultural economy, but not at the expense of the environment or those who live nearby.
