Ohio man rescued from cave in Indiana An Ohio man trapped inside a cave in the Harrison-Crawford State Forest was rescued Sunday evening by Indiana Conservation officers and state forest personnel. Ben Fortner, 21, of Dayton, Ohio, received a small cut to his hand, and was treated by Harrison County EMS and then released. Zack Miller, who was spelunking with Fortner and Katie Condit in Langdon’s Cave in the forest, left the cave to alert Department of Natural Resources personnel at the forest office that Fortner had gotten stuck in a pit located inside the cave, said Mark Farmer, an Indiana Conservation spokesman. Fortner had climbed down into the 30-feet deep pit and could not get back out, Farmer said. Indiana Conservation officers and forest workers used lines and rappelling equipment to free Fortner, who walked from the cave about 7 p.m. Fortner, Miller and Condit did have the proper permit to enter the cave, Farmer said, adding that they did not have a lot of experience, although it was not their first time spelunking.
