Can you believe it has been a decade since we acquired Neversink?
re: Neversink 10th Anniversary - Special Edition Shirts to be Available at NSS Convention
As many long-time SCCi members will recall, Neversink was the Conservancy’s first big cave purchase. With a total acquisition cost of over $51,000, Neversink was a giant leap of faith for the SCCi. Many wondered whether a small caver-run volunteer organization could raise that kind of money. As we all know, the caving community rose to the challenge, and Neversink became the acquisition that put the SCCi on the path to success. Today, the SCCi owns and manages cave preserves valued at more than $750,000.
Nearly ten years after the purchase of Neversink, it remains the SCCi’s most popular preserve. The “Buy a Piece of the Pit” fundraising program we developed to pay for the purchase has become the model for many similar programs by the SCCi and other organizations. Though the purchase was paid off long ago, and all the original “pieces of the pit” have been sold, we still have people coming into the SCCi booth at caving events asking to buy a piece of Neversink.
In commemoration of the groundbreaking effort represented by the Neversink acquisition and in recognition of the love and regard that cavers have for Neversink, we are pleased to offer a new opportunity to buy a piece of the classic TAG pit. For a $50 donation, you can now buy your honorary spot on rope.
Each donation will be rewarded with a special, limited edition, Neversink 10th Anniversary T-shirt. Only 162 shirts will be available, corresponding to the 162-foot pit depth. Each shirt will be accompanied by a commemorative certificate, and each donor will be recognized on a special poster map of the pit. When all 162 spots “on rope” have been sold, the map will be published and this special one time-only program will end. Funds raised by this promotion will be used for cave acquisition and stewardship.
So if you missed out on the original “Buy a Piece of the Pit” program, or if you would like to become a Neversink VIP, with your own personal spot on rope, and help the SCCi buy more caves, come see us at the NSS convention in Huntsville. If you can’t make the convention, you can place your order by mail, phone, or email. But remember - there are only 162 spots, and we expect them to go quickly.
