Alabama: King of crawfishAlabama is now the undisputed crawfish king of America, home to more species of crawfish than any other state in the nation -- boasting 74 more species than California and 46 more than mudbug-farming Louisiana. While Alabama was previously known to be among the top three states for crawfish diversity, it was only in the last few months, after an examination of 4,000 records in the Smithsonian Institution and other museums, that Alabama was discovered to have 83 species, six more than Tennessee, the next most diverse state. Guenter Schuster and Christopher Taylor, nationally recognized crawfish scientists, spent two years surveying several of the nation's most important preserved specimen collections at the request of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Those museum collections contained examples of all 83 species, ranging from blind and tiny cave dwellers to the rusty gravedigger, which has been found in only one place on Earth, in Daphne's D'Olive Creek right by the city sewer plant.
