Biologist finds shrimp species Tom Iliffe, a marine biologist at Texas A&M-Galveston, has discovered more than 300 species of marine life, mostly crustaceans, in 30 years of exploring more than 1,000 caves around the world. His latest find: a shrimp in an underwater cave in the Bahamas. Iliffe has named the species Macromaxillocaris bahamenis. Smaller than most shrimp species at about 2 inches in length, it has no eyes and appears whitish because of a lack of pigmentation caused by the lightless conditions. Iliffe and colleague Fernando Alvarez of the National Autonomous University of Mexico will publish research on the shrimp in the Journal of Crustacean Biology.
