Archaeology Prehistoric camp found in Middle AtlasA prehistoric camp dating to around 50,000 years ago has just been found in the Middle Atlas by a team of Moroccan archaeologists from the National Institute for Archaeological Sciences and Heritage (INSAP), reported MAP news agency. Moroccan archaeologists have recently discovered a new prehistoric site south of the winter sports resort of Michlifen (Azrou region, Middle Atlas). The team was working on a research programme aimed at clarifying the prehistoric and protohistoric environments and cultures during the Holocene in the Middle Atlas. The stone tools found include scrapers and pointed flakes, characteristic of the Aterian culture, widespread in Morocco from about 50,000 years ago. The same research programme also located prehistoric structures in the Ifri Ouberid cave, near Ain Leuh (30 km south of Azrou). According to the first reports, these structures are of Neolithic date, from 6,000-3,000 BC. The finds included flint-working workshops and fireplaces. The latter contained the burnt bones of animals hunted by the prehistoric people: Barbary sheep, gazelles, wild boars and jackals. The presence of pieces of ceramic and grinding material showed that these people knew how to make pottery and practiced agriculture. They were also artistic, as shown by decorative items made of sea-shells and animal bones found by the researchers. Morocco TIMES 10/13/2005 | 2:53 pm www.moroccotimes.com/news/article.asp?id=10248
