Moravian Karst likely to become UNESCO geoparkCeskéNoviny.cz Czech Happenings Blansko- The Moravian Karst (Moravsky kras), comprising over 1,000 limestone caves, might become one of the UNESCO geoparks next year, Leos Stefka, head of the Moravian Karst protected landscape area administration, told CTK. So far only the Cesky raj (Bohemian Paradise), east Bohemia, with unique sandstone formations has joined the prestigious European Geopark Network. The Moravia Karst is the second oldest protected landscape area in the 10-million Czech Republic. It was declared 50 years ago. The karst offers unique limestone underground systems, including the 33 km long "Amateur Cave," which is the longest underground system in the Czech Republic. The famous Macocha chasm and another four caves accessible to the public in the locality are annually visited by some 350,000 people, Stefka added. Environmentalists say that the Moravia Karst should be listed among world geological parks over its unique character. Article
