Sumner County Legislation introduced to help sink hole victimsDec 16, 2005, 03:26 PM CST A gaping sinkhole in Sumner County is getting deeper and more destructive by the minute. It has nearly swallowed the Givens' family home in Portland, but their insurance company is not covering the damage. In some states insurance companies are required to pay for damage caused by sinkholes. However, that is not the case in Tennessee. At least one state lawmaker from Sumner County is sympathizing with the Givens family and are looking for a solution. Representative Mike McDonald has introduced legislation that would require insurance companies to cover sinkholes, which can easily form in Tennessee's rocky geology. "If you lose your home, that's a major investment. It's hard to recoup so I think it's extremely important that insurance companies be required to cover sinkhole damage," said Rep. Mike McDonald (D) Portland. Currently the Givens' insurance company, The Hartford, is refusing to pay for the damages. The company says, "based on the information we received, Hartford is denying coverage and disappointed." The company says it is having legal council review the claim and policy to determine what can be done to assist the Givens family. A fund has been set up to help the couple affected. If you would like to assist, go to any Cumberland Bank branch and asked to contribute to the Troy and Yvonne Givens fund. www.wsmv.com/Global/story.asp?S=4251434(Ref. thread) nssmembersforum.proboards28.com/index.cgi?board=geology&action=display&thread=1133532803
