blog.midwestlakes.org/05-09/lake-chesterfield.html followup to: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5191079/Last year, a hundreds to thousands of dollars assessment was made against every homeowner to repair the leak. This year, a leak developed in a different place. This has become so much of an embarrassment they've quit covering it on the news. Water emerges at a spring a couple of miles away. I just LOVE sinkholes and rivers. They teach humility....*|:-)

So do they compact these sink hole areas by dropping weights from helicopters and filling the depressions?

So do they compact these sink hole areas by dropping weights from helicopters and filling the depressions? No. This is Missouri. They go to church and pray for miracles. The usual mitigation for a growing sinkhole is to line it with some sort of chain link or expanded metal, then fill the hole with cobble (6" diameter rock or so) and then cover with soil. In the case of sinkhole riddled lakes, they try to pump grout (concrete slurry) in the hole, then put a plastic or clay liner on top of it to hold the water. Which it does for a while. But hey, if you want a 'cement pond' it's easier to just build one that way.... While I would love to own a spring, creek or riverfront propert (running water), I just don't get the attraction of private lakes. Lots of money to build, high maintenance, you have to add your own fish and aquatic plants, and they are going to silt in anyway. They are nasty to swim in, and breed mosquitoes to boot. If you have livestock, of course you need a pond. But the newest thing around here is to build a 1-2 acre or less pond which shaped like a Cheerio, and then, once you have this island, build a bridge to the island. You know, I almost could see the island if you had to paddle or swim to it, and you could put the kids/spouse/yourself there for a timeout. But the rest of it is pure foolishness according to me. People. Most days, I'd rather be a quartz crystal sparkling in the sun.

We have an area of town that has a sink hole problem from old coal mines. The passages collapse once in a while since they built a housing development over it many years ago. I was surprised to hear about the "drop the weight from the helicopter" method used in Frorida to compact karst areas. I figured since Missouri is the "show me" state, they would be using this method also. Personally, I can't wait to see it.

I was surprised to hear about the "drop the weight from the helicopter" method used in Frorida to compact karst areas. I figured since Missouri is the "show me" state, they would be using this method also. Personally, I can't wait to see it. Geologically, 3/5 of the state is karst. Some areas (like Greene, Perry , Oregon and parts of St. Louis counties) are sinkhole plains which rival parts of the Floridian in terms of sinkholes per square mile. I had not heard of the 'drop and destroy' method of sinkhole remediation. However, this may explain the swarms of black helicopters which are reported in our more rural areas. Some natives believe they are from the UN, there to take their lands by invasion, but being from the USGS to destroy the topography might be a good reason, too. These folks have not glommed on to the fact that silhouetted against a bright sky, all helicopters are black....
