Experts say it will take a week to repair Alabama 24 sinkholeBy Sheryl Marsh DAILY Staff Writer smarsh@decaturdaily.com · 340-2437 A sinkhole in Alabama 24 caused a portion of the highway to close Tuesday, forcing motorists to take a short detour. Morgan County District 1 Commissioner Jeff Clark said his shop workers are helping Trinity street employees repair the road. We'll probably be down here several days because we have to pour concrete in it," said Clark. "The road sunk in about 3 or 4 feet and we are still excavating, trying to get to the bottom of it. We'll have to go about 30 feet to get to the bottom. It looks like it might be some kind of underground cavern or cave." The sinkhole is in the westbound lane across from Jones Fence Co. Clark said this is the second sinkhole in three weeks. "We put about 200 tons of rock in it the last time," Clark said. "Trinity called us because we have the barricades and signs, and we're trying to make sure no one gets hurt before we can get it covered." Trinity annexed that part of the highway, which used to be in unincorporated Morgan County, Clark said. The sinkhole appeared Monday and Clark said Trinity officials told him that a vehicle hit it. Clark said traffic will have a detour on Tower Street. He said Trinity's engineer said it would take about a week to repair the road. www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/news/051102/sinkhole.shtml
