The ' Hot Caving News ' from today's TAG Cave Survey Meeting, a combined Tennessee Cave Survey, Alabama Cave Survey and Georgia Speleological Survey meeting. According to each State Cave Survey the combined number of caves for Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and Florida is approximately 15,000! ;D

Whoo-hoo!....thanks for that update Lynn! If that little tidbit was mentioned at the meeting I missed it. I know the total number of qualifying Alabama caves increased to 4,231 this year, which still doesn't cover the "secret" discoveries that cavers are working on and have not turned in yet. I still think Alabama is at a disadvantage by maintaining the current standard of requiring a cave to be at least 50 feet in depth or length before qualifying for inclusion on the state cave survey. Yeah I know...would I like some cheese with that whine. ;D ;D

I wonder why the state cave surveys don't standardize the qualification? Because different states (geological surveys) have different qualifications, and if the state surveys are cooperators, they have to agree with their local state first, and each other second.

That has the sound of a red tape nightmare!

I guess it would be a red tape nightmare, at least if you go by the state geological surveys. ;D I can't really see the Tennessee Cave Survey (TCS) and Georgia Speleological Survey (GSS) being agreeable to giving up any of their caves to meet the 50 foot rule imposed by the Alabama Cave Survey (ACS). I suppose Alabama is the one that would need to lower their minimum length/depth to match the TCS requirements, which would increase the number of qualifying caves for Alabama. It's a tough call, but I'm willing to do that to stay more in tune with the other TAG Cave Survey's.

Here in Ohio, if you can get your body into it, we consider it a cave!
