We'll I've piddled around with my pennies so long Canon is now bringing out the G9, and discontinuing the G7. Major diff is RAW processing and 12 MP. I don't know that 10 to 12 MP makes any difference to me. Should RAW processing, or is this just another timewaster for perfectionists?

I've read some people say it is best to do photomanipulations in raw formats where you don't lose any of the information through compression algorithms etc. Your results are more pure and not affected by the choices made by whomever programmed the photo file format. Since the file formats attempt to achieve different ends and are written by humans it goes without saying there will be errors in what happens when you manipulate them. Are they visible errors? Maybe not but if you can avoid them and are doing pro work why not choose raw and do it all there? Them convert the finished work to whatever afterwards.
Photoshop is supposed to work with raw photo formats very nicely as is many of the Apple software packages and other professional photo software.
