I've been dreaming and drooling about a Canon PowerShot G7 since yesterday.
Not rushing out tomorrow...I wish!...but this camera does everything I'd want (on paper). I really do NOT want a dSLR at this time...plus many to most of the dSLRs are too big for me to use efficiently. (I looked at a Rebel XTi yesterdary, too, and couldn't even hold the darn thing, since it is so right-handed, and dropped it onto the display case. Only about an inch, so probably didn't hurt it. )
Any input with other Canon G Series digial cameras?
Tnx in advance, Az

First impression it is an excellent advanced level camera. I have had a G1 and a G5 both were good cameras. I don't know about the G7 but if they are like the two previous mentioned I liked everything about them except for two things. The lens was no where near wide enough for my applications and the body was not durable. Both the Canon and Nikon's are this way however the Nikon lens did go to 24mm. If that fits you then get one. I agree, no need to get a DSLR when Advanced level cameras will do. And they will do everything a DSLR can still, Advanced cameras are getting scarce these days. Thanks Bob.
This has an equivalent 35-210 lens... and a 0.75X wide angle adapter to make that 26.5mm-- they say. I was not impressed with sales human. I asked her about the wide angle, and she said, "Oh, I wouldn't get that-- it makes the picture look distorted around the edges." I've been shooting film SLRs since I was about 15 (even though my usual hauling around camera has always been a rangefinder-- the current one being the Pentax WR-90) and hey, that balloony edge distortion of the huge foot or fist has been around forever.
My biggest gripes with the 6.0 MP FE-180 have been the tendency to purple fringing of tree limbs against the sky, and the limitations due to a lack of a manual focus. Macro flower shots drive the camera crazy. And low light fuzziness, largely because it's flash is about the size of a Pez candy. Gotta have a hot shoe! which the G7 does.
I wish the G7 had a better battery, or a AA option pack...I'm usually close to my car for recharging, but don't really spend a lot of time in hotel or motels on the road. That's my biggest don't gotta but wanna.
I know photo geeks are complaining because Canon dropped RAW support on this camera. I've got Photoshop and Photo-Paint and have been messing with photos since I was dodging in a black and white darkroom, but wouldn't know what to do with RAW images if one snuck up on me.
We'll see what sorts of prices I can come up with for a camera and accessory pack. And keep working hard in hopes that the prices keep dropping.
