3) SERA Photo and Art Salons
By: Don Hunter (Colbert, Georgia)
The Ninth Annual SERA Photo Salon and the Second Annual SERA Art Salon will be held during the upcoming SERA Winter Business Meeting, hosted by the Chattanooga Grotto at the Parish Life Center of St. Jude Catholic Church, 930 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN, on Saturday, February 3, 2007. If you can't attend but have photos or art to enter, you are encouraged to make arrangements to enter your work. We had many great entries last year and would like to have another good turnout this year. Can anyone challenge Tim Curtis for Best of Show this year? I'm sure there are many great cave photographs out there that would do well. Sometimes the basic old grab shot turns out great and is worth entering and sharing. So, give your work a look and get the entries in. Entries must be delivered to the salon on the day of judging; no entries accepted by mail or email.
PHOTO SALON
Three main categories are to be judged: B&W, Color and Digitally Enhanced Photos (Composite Images/Significant Application of Effects). Within each category, photos will be judged in the following subcategories:
* People/Animals - People or cave critters are the central focus or theme of the image. The cave is secondary.
* Entrances/Exterior Scenes - Cave entrances or exterior (karst related) scenes are the central focus.
* Artistic - Cavers may be present in the image but the cave is the central focus. Photos in this category should present an artistic bent, with the use of effective or dramatic lighting, striking composition, etc.
* Humor - Humor is at the center of the photograph.
Prints mounted on poster board or foam core board are the preferred medium for entry but entries submitted on an electronic medium, such as CD or jump drive will also be accepted. A limit of three entries per category/subcategory please. Please note the distinction this year between the color photo and digitally enhanced photo categories.
While all color photos are expected to have a certain, but minimal, amount of photo editing, such as bright/con, color, hue applied to provide the most pleasing rendering of the image, the digitally enhanced category represents photos which have been significantly altered with heavy application of effects tools or even composition of images. It is the responsibility of the photographer to determine which category is appropriate for his/her image. No photos of unsafe caving or poor conservation practices will be accepted for judging.
ART SALON
The following categories will be judged:
* Textiles
* Graphic Design
* Paintings/Drawings (Charcoal, Pen and Ink)
* Sculpture
* Other
A limit of three entries per category please.
