My name's Chuck Sutherland, I live in Cookeville, TN. I enjoy all non-violent outdoors activities: backpacking, caving, kayaking, camping, photography, etc. I am a conservationist, and very interested in cave, forest, water issues. I'm a GIS major at TTU. I'm new to the caving "scene" and have met just a few people, but I am learning that I'll see similar names wherever I go. I've "discovered" a few new caves which have been or will be submitted to TCS. I use GIS, GPS, and luck to find new caves. I'm always interested in an outdoor adventure, so if you're in the region and need a partner send me an email.

Yes, I'm quickly discovering that you're right Dr. Beaner. And it saddens me to think of all the underground treasures that will go uncaptured by my camera. Thanks for the friendly welcome!

My wifes family is from Cookeville and her folks are hoping to move back there soon as they sell their house in Michigan (no holding our breath there). I wish they would get there soon so we would have a good excuse to cave up in that area.
We used to go to the Window Cliffs up there a lot until the residents got sick of people parking there. My father in-law used to play there as a boy back in the 40s. It's a really cool place and I would love to go back again. I couldn't get anyone at the grotto there (Upper Cumberland?) to respond to me last time - oh well.
I would love to get to know some cavers from Cookeville though since we're up there a lot, and if the in-laws will move back there, we'll have an excuse to be there even more.

Hey Graveleye, I haven't yet been to the Window Cliffs. I have some GPS points for the caves and features there, but they appear to be on private property. I would like to get there, but the opportunity hasn't quite presented itself yet. Entrance is somewhat more difficult these days... I'm in the Upper Cumberland Grotto, and if you're in the area, look me up and I'll adventure with you.

hey Chuck, I'll definitely take you up on the offer. We're there at least once a year, but usually more than that. My father in law is 78 years old. He knows another way to get to the Window Cliffs, but he usually mentions something about Brahma bulls too, so I think his way might be more hazardous than politely asking for permission!! He really has some neat stories, having grown up in the Baxter area. Apparently there is a cave that goes underneath the cliffs and out the other side, but from all accounts I have heard it is pretty grim. That whole little area is just too cool to me - I wish I had the money to buy the property!! Same goes for us.. if you are ever down in the southernmost parts of TAG, give us a holler and we'll go find us a cave to explore. Later, Kevin

I started caving in cookeville as I went to TTu, there are enough caves in city limits to keep you busy for a week or two depending on how often you go. There is a farmer that owns a large dairy farm at the top of window cliffs and he has a way to park at the top of the cliffs, but you would have to get to know him. there is also a pretty interesting 4x4 trail that will get you down there but its a good walk. there is a cave that goes thru and it is small windy and cold...tell everyone at the next ucg meeting that brian gindling said hello will you?
