How Time Flies 01/02/08 - 50 years agoBy Jack Keefe, Pantagraph.com Jan. 2, 1958: Nationally known embalming expert Curtis F. Calloway, 77, died at his home, 302 South East Street. In his time he spoke on his trade in all 48 states. He was known for restoring the features of Floyd Collins, who died in a notorious 1925 Kentucky cave ordeal. Text

An interesting fact to ponder. Didn't Floyd's nose get broken off during an attempt by rival cave operators to dump his casket into the river etc? Now that would have been tough to repair! Mr Calloway must've been good at what he did.

Actually, by the time his body was removed from the cave, parts of his face had been eaten, presumably by cave crickets. This was the damage which had to be restored.
During the corpse stealing, allegedly one of his legs was lost. I say allegedly, because some say yes, some say no, and probably the Collins family or those involved in his reinternment in 1989 are the only ones who know for sure.

Cave crickets are part of the cave food chain. They eat certain things in caves and are food for other cave animals or visitors (racoons etc). They don't hurt people in any way as far as I know but they do feed on dead things if available (people included!).
