I have about a sandwich bag worth of carbide that has broken down into powder and I'm not sure of how to dispose of it. I live in the Bronx now and didn't think it was such a good idea to drop it down the garbage chute . Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Sean

Put into a metal food, coffee or paint can. Pour in enough water to make a slurry. (water over the top of the carbide.) Stir well. Let sit overnight. (this brings the chemical reaction to completion, and should offgas any remaining acetylene). At that point, what you have is lime. You can either let the water evaporate, leaving a sort of inert concrete in the can to be put out with your solid trash, or stir it into some dirt somewhere (yes, there probably are some trace metals in it, but the bulk of it is the same stuff as ag lime). In any event after you stir water into it and let it sit, it is no longer potentially explosive.
