A 3-acre wildfire near Ape Cave that broke out Monday could spread upslope by the wind, the U.S. Forest Service reported. As a precaution, the agency closed off Ape Cave and Road 8303 at the Trail of Two Forests Trailhead, according to Tom Mulder, manager of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. "We will monitor the situation this evening and, based upon the status of the fire, will assess what facilities and roads will be open tomorrow," Mulder said in a press release. Monday afternoon, fire crews and equipment were en route to the fire, and a 3,000-gallon air tanker was ordered to the scene. The fire was burning in an area about a quarter-mile south of the entrance to the Upper Cave. One positive factor is that much of the terrain is made of the rocky surface of an old lava flow, so "the fuels are pretty spotty," said Peter Frenzen, monument scientist. On the other hand, it's a difficult area to fight fires in, he said. "The biggest challenge is the afternoon winds," he said. Ape Cave is the longest lava tube in the United States and is located southwest of Mount St. Helens in the 110,000-acre Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Crews contain fire near Ape CaveWednesday, July 26, 2006 The Columbian Advertisement Fire crews gained control of a three-acre blaze near the popular Ape Cave at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The fire started on a hot, dry Monday afternoon a mile north of the ancient lava tube of Mount St. Helens. A 3,000-gallon air tanker, dispatched from Redmond, Ore., delivered the critical blow against the head of the fire late Monday afternoon, allowing Forest Service fire crews to attack the fire. The Gifford Pinchot National Forest closed Ape Cave and Forest Road 8303 beyond the Trail of Two Forests parking lot due to fire operations. Officials expected to open both visitor attractions sometime late today or Thursday. The cause of the fire was under investigation. The cave is the largest intact lava tube in the continental United States, with a length of 12,810 feet. Article: www.columbian.com/news/localNews/07262006news45920.cfm

Not quite - Ape Cave is the 15th longest lava tube in the US right now. These reporters should really check their facts! Deadhorse Cave, also in Washington, is the longest known lava tube in the continental US. Glad to hear the fire is under control. There might just be some Convention-goers in that area in the coming weeks...
