Old lime caves turned into storage businessBy John Bailey The Dickson Herald CUMBERLAND FURNACE — From the outside, Meritex Cumberland Commerce Center on Starks Road in Cumberland Furnace is a couple of King Kong sized doors wedged into a rock face, but on the inside it is 500,000 square feet of modern storage possibilities. “My first impression of the facility was ‘wow, this is pretty cool’, but I just hoped it wasn’t going to cave in on me,” facility manager Lewis Williams said. “They had a lot of work to do to get it ready, with eight feet of standing water in some places to be pumped out, roadways to be paved and storage areas to build out.” Since the facility opened more than three years ago, the old lime caves have grown into a state of the art subsurface storage facility. It currently has 150,000 square feet developed for storage with 350,000 square feet ready to be built to meet any customer’s needs.
