IMAX film at museum takes us into the depths of caves Friday, June 16, 2006 BY ALLISON FREEMAN Star-Ledger Staff KIDS' STUFF The audience is taken down into the depths of the earth in "Journey Into Amazing Caves," the new IMAX film at the American Museum of Natural History's Le- Frak Theater. The film, shown at the Liberty Science Center IMAX Dome Theater in 2001, follows cavers Nancy Aulenbach, a second grade teacher, and microbiologist Hazel Barton, a research associate at the University of Colorado, as they explore caves in the Grand Canyon, Greenland and Mexico. The 45-minute film features music by the Moody Blues and is narrated by actor Liam Neeson. "Why would you want to go into a hole in the ground?" Aulenbach says in the movie. "Curiosity. You don't have to go into these holes in the ground. You can sit back in your seats, and we will bring that to you." The cavers take samples of earth, rock, mold and other organic material from the caves and express hope they might find a substance that could lead to a new medicine. A treatment for leukemia was developed from microbes found in a cave, Aulenbach says. The film may not be appropriate for young children afraid of the dark, people with a fear of heights, or those prone to motion sickness. www.nj.com/entertainment/ledger/index.ssf?/base/entertainment-0/1150438725269260.xml&coll=1
