Sloans Valley Cave Great Rock Sink Entrance Pulaski County, KY
Great Rock Sink is closed to sport cavers. Period.
The property is being posted with no trespassing signs and cave protection signs. The owner Mr. Lynne Haynes wants to keep people out of the cave. He has been experiencing problems with spelunkers entering and exiting without having asked permission. He has been confronting groups who have been going to or exiting from the Great Rock Sink Entrance. Mr. Haynes owns the entrance and the surrounding land. Please respect the land owner.
For years most of us have assumed the entrance is on US Army Corps of Engineer land. It is not. The Corps of Engineers has an easement to the current water level of Lake Cumberland -- what ever that water level is. At the moment the water level is well inside the cave.
Several of us met with Mr. Haynes yesterday to discuss the situation. As a result of the meeting on his front porch yesterday, cavers who have a genuine interest in doing scientific work, surveying, or other valid cave study can obtain written permission to enter the cave. Cavers must personally advise Mr. Haynes when they are entering the cave. If you are interested in doing work in the cave, please contact me or Hilary Lambert and we will put you in touch with Mr. Haynes.
Under no circumstances should cavers enter or exit Great Rock Sink without first having obtained permission from Mr. Haynes!
Thank you,
Bill Walden October 29, 2007

thats a shame. ive noticed the cave is explored alot more with the lake level the way it is. I went into the green house entrance at about 9 o'clock p.m. two days ago and talked to the crockett's and they're alright with cavers in this entrance as long as you have verbal permission. i hope that this does not change as well... where exactly is this entrance? my map doesn't have any landmarks on it to show where the entrances are.

Say Plainisky, you said that you live in Somerset? Why don't you ask about and give us here on US Caver an update on the scheduled water levels of the Cumberland River from now on until until the dam is repaired.
How low can you go is the question.

Well our normal level is 760' and it is down to 680' for right now. When they began repairing the dam the project was supposed to last seven years. But thaks to speedy engineers, they are now saying it could be two years. Now, the level will rise normally in the spring with rain although many passages will be open. it shouldn't be too affected by this. A friend said that if the dam was 100% fixed TODAY it would still take about a year to reach the normal level. so in answering your question; you have plenty of time up to atleast two years.

Sounds like we need to schedule a trip either 1st of the year or sooner to get in there and look around..
However beware of the bat hibernation. I believe that some areas of the cave is gated, so just be cautious if you see the gate. We don't want to wake our little flying friends.
Andy might shed some light on to whether or not it would be safe to explore the cave around the first of the year, due to the hibernating bats.
I will check with the rest of the crew and we may try to go soon, if there is a section of the cave that isn't flooded and far enough from the bats.
Later all

There is an entrance that is closed due to bats but as far as being in the cave you don't see many. And its as dry as can be right about now. Let me know if you end up planning anything. Enjoy
