At least the main NSS page seems to be up this morning, but no DB yet.

Wasn't me Dan, I wasn't even home when the crash occurred. ;D
By the way....Anyone notice the handy "Spell Check" feature at the bottom of the reply box? That's a handy little item to have around.

Being a little mushroom ;D, I have not heard any mention of an estimated date for the NSS Discussion Board to be back online yet. Being one of the volunteer moderators of that board I guess we're on like a "DB Vacation" until such time that it is up and running again. Has anyone else heard anything?

This was posted on the CIG-list today by Tom Rea:
Please be aware that the caver's forum "NSS Members" being publicized by Sharon Faulkner is not sponsored or sanctioned by the NSS, or associated with the Society in any way.
The NSS discussion board will cease to exist on Monday, August 22.
(permission given to circulate amongst cavers)
I don't think you should flood Tom With emails about this. It would only create bad feelings about the whole affair.
Here are the questions being asked to Tom now by myself and others:
I wrote: Or do you mean we will be getting a newer and better version of the DB?

How is it possible that NSS Operations VP Tom Rea can threaten this website in any manner? Or, is Tom simply stating that this site is not the "official" NSS Members Forum, which at the moment is defunct?
Why is it that I feel uneasy with Tom's comment?

I think Tom is saying that this board has nothing to do with the official NSS board.
I feel uneasy about his statement that the NSS board will cease to exist on Monday.

(permission given to circulate amongst cavers) Hummm.....I do not recall anyone ever saying the "NSS Members" forum has anything to do with the NSS. Just that some members of the NSS put it up. I have to admit it has come in handy since the NSS Discussion Board crashed and I do appreciate it being here until the NSS Discussion Board is functional again. Geez.....I.... er...am?.... ah....was? one of the volunteer Moderators of the NSS Discussion Board. It would have been nice to have been properly informed of this decision. I mean...oh my good golly....it was posted to the CIG-list by Tom Rea then cavemike reposted the message to this board then I finally get the information. humm... Well anyway, if Tom Rea put the message out I am sure it is factual and the NSS Discussion Board will cease to exist Aug 22 as Tom Rea stated. But sadly, in reality, the NSS Discussion Board ceased to exist on Aug 13th when that crash occurred.

At the Colorado Cave Discussion Board, Wayne Harrison announced that he has resigned as administrator of the official NSS Discussion Board. I hope that Wayne does not mind if I quote him from his post:
"In any case, I submitted my resignation as forum administrator on Wednesday and efforts to get the forum back up were halted. There was a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff at play which it serves no purpose to go into."
So, it seems as if Tom is speaking of the official NSS Discussion Board rather than this board. Is the NSS dropping communication among cavers of the Society? If so, than boards such as this one, and the various state and regional boards are of even greater importance.

Yes, sadly Wayne did send his resignation to us Moderator's yesterday and his reasons for resigning were understandable to me. I believe Wayne has worked hard in his Volunteer Administrator position and I Thanked him for doing so. But I had no inkling notion that any efforts to get the NSS Discussion Board up and running again were haulted at that time.
You have a good question, "Is the NSS dropping communication among cavers of the Society?" I'm afraid that Only the NSS knows the answer to that.

Lynn,
In your quote of the original posting to the CIG list, you left out the quotation marks around the words "NSS Members". I cannot speak for Tom, but this says to me that he was referring to this DB being called the NSS members forum.
Being called the NSS members forum could lead some to believe that this DB is the official DB of the NSS and santctioned by the NSS. Yes it is put up by NSS memebers, but it is not the NSS discussion board. I would venture to say this is what Tom was referring to when he posted to the CIG list.
Not trying to start a war, just pointing out an error in a posting.
As for Tom, he tends to answer things simply. Most of the time when I send him a message regarding grotto business, I get a reply back of "Ok, T" or "Fine, T". This is just how he answers things and not being rude. I would not read to much into the comment on the CIG list by Tom, I believe he was just stating a fact since Mike Dowden posted the link to this forum there.
I'm the one that replied back to Tom on the CIG list about the status of the NSS discussion board and at this moment I still do not know the answer as to what was exactly meant by "The NSS discussion board will cease to exist on Monday, August 22." I'm curious to find out, but it may be next week as Tom is out of town for the weekend, unless he replies before he leaves this morning.

I am stunned to hear the forum will cease as of Aug 22.
NSS web operations do not have a very good reputation except for the first year or two. It's been down hill ever since Josh and Andy got uninvolved it seems.
How sad.....

Mark Sparks [/color] Thanks Mark for pointing that out. I don't know much about the controls on this board yet. That quote button apparently left the quotation marks out so I modified the post and added the quotation marks.

In sharon's post to other groups she says to use this forum for NSS Communication Well, DUH!!!!!!! I say 10-4 on the administrators taking off their mask. But, it also makes me wonder why you would agree to be a moderator of a forum where you have no idea who your administrator is. Who asked you to be moderator? Why not ask them and share the info with us? johnny come lately......

This is free software on a free server. We found it and started playing with it after discussion board number two disappeared. Looks like it's still here, which means there is more than one adminstrator, since that's how we set it up in the first place. As a place to learn how these discussion boards work. Does that help explain things a little better?

The official NSS Discussion Board is a valuable means of communication among members and persons interested in caves and caving worldwide. I've often turned to the board for updated news and information when something happens in the caving world; to not have this critical member service seems unthinkable.
Hopefully, Tom Rea will respond to cavers inquiries and set the record straight - is the NSS Discussion Board defunct, never to return? Or, are his comments being misinterpreted? Since he serves the membership of the Society as Operations Vice President, he has the duty to be responsive to the membership.

I just received a reply from Tom regarding my question last night of... "Do you mean the actual NSS discussion board that is not up and running at this time will no longer exist at all come Monday?"
His reply was, YES. This was answered in a post to the CIG list with an explanation in fewer than 40 words. However, there was no permission given in his post to re-post to other lists (as was in his original with the comment regarding the termination of the NSS DB) and I do not feel the comments would offer much benefit/insight anyways.
"Geez.....I....er...am?....ah....was? one of the volunteer Moderators of the NSS Discussion Board. It would have been nice to have been properly informed of this decision. I mean...oh my good golly....it was posted to the CIG-list by Tom Rea then cavemike reposted the message to this board then I finally get the information. humm..."
It seems this same thing happened to Phil Winkler in a previous DB. If I remember correctly, someone posted that Phil had been removed from his volunteer position, which caught Phil completely off guard. As a "newer" member of organized caving, actions such as this really rubbed me the wrong way and could really deter potential new members from joining. I know for sure that the issue involving Phil caused a NSS member I know, to question whether or not to renew and if they wanted to be part of an organization that treats its volunteers that way.
Just noting some things I have noticed...
