Bat disease found at Water GapNew Jersey News Spelunkers are now barred from exploring any caves and mine shafts within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area because officials have closed these caverns indefinitely in order to protect native bats from a deadly fungus. Officials have found white nose syndrome, a disease that has killed hundreds of thousands of bats in the Northeast, in some areas within the park, said John Donahue, park superintendent, in a news release today.
