OMAN A breathtaking journey into Al-Hoota cave AL-HOOTA, OMAN– Our slim, turban-clad guide assures us that the "cave is air-conditioned and lit with artificial lights." Yet, as we ascend the staircase from 810 metres above sea level, the air grows thin and I watch my step in the dim glow of electric torches. Al-Hoota Cave is a 2.7-kilometre underground tunnel at the foot of the Jebel Shams (Sun Mountain) in northern Oman. Experienced adventure spelunkers are lowered into the cave via the Al-Hoota entrance on a rope, but thousands of visitors opt for the easy way: 40-minute guided treks that cost about $16 Cdn. and start at the Al-Fallah entrance daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. www.thestar.com/Travel/article/588792
