Walker County's cave-cliff rescue team is great aid to outdoor enthusiasts 10/07/07 Like right out of a Hollywood feature, the cool ride of one arm of the Walker County Fire and Rescue brandishes the menacing insignia of a bat. However, this bat isn’t meant to strike fear or fright into the hearts of would-be villains, but symbolizes the domain of Walker County Fire and Rescue cave and cliff team. his specialized team operates within the county to respond to distress signals sent out by any number of the county’s high volume of caving and cliff enthusiasts. Last week, an individual from Atlanta had to be extricated by the team after he suffered a broken leg while exploring Anderson’s Spring Cave in Kensington. “This type of sporting is a surprisingly strong economic engine for tourism within our county,” said cave and cliff team coordinator Diane Cousineau. In fact, the county is set to host a National Speleological Society (NSS) event over Columbus Day weekend on Pigeon Mountain. “Cavers from all over the country will attend,” said Cousineau. This team of 12 volunteers has operated within Walker County for 20 years. news.mywebpal.com/news_tool_v2.cfm?pnpID=730&NewsID=843938&CategoryID=3511&show=localnews&om=0
