Beetles, bats and blind cricketsTeam scouring Ohio caves to document every animal By Morgan Day, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH HIGHLAND COUNTY, Ohio -- Bill Stitzel ditched his "Guano: Breakfast of cavers" sweat shirt, knotted his do-rag and strapped on elbow and knee pads. The Springfield mechanic and three fellow cavers were suiting up in front of a faded red barn near their camp site, preparing for an early morning hike. Their destination was a hole in a hill about a mile away, where they would continue their summer homework -- taking inventory of everything that lives in Ohio caves. "What we're doing, in essence, is looking in caves to see if these are species that need to be protected," said Wittenberg University biology professor Horton Hobbs, who is leading a two-year, statewide census funded by $30,000 from Ohio Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
