Waste storage? BY MARY CATHERINE MARTIN THE DAILY IBERIAN A salt cavern at Weeks Island could soon hold up to 11 million barrels of oil exploration and production waste. If implemented, the disposal facility would be the first of its kind in Louisiana. Exploration and production — E&P — waste is nationally exempt from being classified as hazardous, although it contains hazardous components, said Brendan Fruge, communications manager, and John King, director of regulatory and legal affairs for CCS Midstream Services, the company that has applied for the permit. Wilma Subra, nationally recognized environmentalist and chemist from New Iberia, said the hazardous percentage is 40 to 70 percent. “We can’t shy away from that fact (that it contains hazardous components) — it is what it is,” said King. He added, however, that this material moves in commerce every day. “It may as well go to a place that’s secure,” he said. Some have voiced concern about the cavern’s usage. Full Article
