An adult Boy Scout leader was injured in Crooked Creek Ice Cave this past Saturday (September 16, 2006). A large rock, in excess of 60 pounds, dislodged from a height of 15-20 feet hitting the adult on the left side of his face below the helmet and his left shoulder. The victim had a complete loss of consciousness for approximately 2 minutes. The adult was completely unaware of surrounding activity during the subsequent extraction and on-scene medical care. A physician member of the caving party provided immediate medical care to the victim. The cave rescue phone chain was activated and the leader of the trip, a Firefighter and a Paramedic, coordinated in-cave movement of the adult. A third adult in the party, who is a Firefighter and an EMT, coordinated vertical rope extraction at the cave's upper entrance. Other cavers and members of the caving party provided additional manpower.
Once removed from the cave, the injured adult was airlifted to the University of Kentucky hospital at approximately 3:20 pm. The victim sustained fractures in his pelvis due to impact load transmission through his body. He is scheduled to be released from the hospital on Monday.
