Benguet’s century-old mummies need helpBy DEXTER A. SEE The mummies, which have been preserved for several centuries now, are the major attractions at a fifth-class municipality in Benguet province. It also gained recognition from international and local visitors. Local officials revealed that some of the mummies, which are deposited in several caves in Kabayan town, have reached a stage where they are now rapidly deteriorating and poses a serious threat to the local tourism industry which provides livelihood to a substantial number of Ibaloi and Kalanguya residents near the sites where the mummies are stored. Currently, the local government has banned tourists from entering the mummy caves as its own little way of reducing the deterioration of the mummies so that they will not be exposed to human contact.
