Family believes Marmet cave has Civil War significanceA family believes a cave nestled in the backwoods of Marmet carries a bit of historical, Civil War significance in it. Locals call it Salt Peters Cave, not to be confused with the one in Nicholas County. Legend has it that Confederate soldiers used this 50-foot high cave for shelter, and to convert bat guano into saltpeter, a key ingredient for gunpowder. "They stored ammunition in it," said Shirley Patterson, 42, of Marmet. Stories of the Confederacy occupying the cave have passed down through Patterson's family, who's lived in Marmet since the 1800s. Full Article
