LANL offering tours of art-filled cave(Los Alamos National Laboratory) By THE NEW MEXICAN May 17, 2007 Trail typically off-limits to publicLos Alamos National Laboratory Cultural Resources team is hosting public self-guided tours of the rarely open Mortandad Cave kiva from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The tours are one of 69 events occurring around the state as part of New Mexico Heritage Preservation Month. The cave is located off the Mortandad Cavate Trail on the south side of East Jemez Road about a half-mile west of the intersection of N.M. 4 and East Jemez Road. The cave has well-preserved art in black and tan colors depicting serpents, nature symbols and other figures, according to lab spokesman James E. Rickman. ``If you've never seen it, it is certainly worth seeing,'' Rickman said. The trail is on lab property and is normally closed to the public. Visitors can park along the side of East Jemez Road near the trail head, Rickman said. The trail is a moderate one and a half mile round trip hike. Visitors should wear good footwear and come prepared for stormy weather. Laboratory Cultural Resources Team members will be stationed at the trail head and along the trail to give historical and interpretive information about the site. Visitors should pack out all their trash and must not take anything from the area. All visitors must be off the trail by 3 p.m. both days. Full Article

Dang it - that cave is a little out of the way for taking a day trip to from here! Oh well - maybe some of our western cavers can go and take a few photos for us???
