Unveiling the northern Mogao Grottoes Pictured here are the northern caves of Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. There are sculptures and murals in the southern and northern areas of the grottoes. Peng Jinzhang (second from right), an archaeological expert and research fellow from the North Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes Research Academy identifies unearthed pottery. The Dunhuang Academy has announced that after six rounds of exploration, archaeological experts have proved that the north caves are an important part of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. These were caves in which monks lived and meditated, not a place where painters and sculptors lived, as previously speculated. More than 70,000 cultural relics have been found in the caves. Some 1,451 pieces have already been identified and placed in exhibits, and many were the first such relics to be found, filling in blanks in archaeological records. Full Article

That's a pretty interesting article. Too bad there are no photos with it. It sounds like they are talking about caves used for various purposes by Chinese monks over long time periods. I wonder if some of the living quarters etc were carved into the limestone as seen on Europe etc.
