Intro: SULTHAN BATHERY: The unchecked mining activities and the lethargy of the District Tourism Promotion Council and the State Archaeology Department will prove fatal to the famous Edakkal Caves.
“About 50 granite quarries are functioning here, but only 3 have permits,” said Thomas Ambalavayal, convener of the Edakkal Cave Protection Committee. “We have been demanding immediate closure of all granite quarries in the vicinity but nothing materialised so far,” he added.
Thomas also alleged that many have encroached the land near the caves and have already obtained title deeds. Construction activities are on in the locality endangering the caves, he said.
