Gardena Home Red-Tagged After Sinkhole Opens Up
Cavern 20-Feet Wide, 12 Feet Long

A Gardena woman is facing a giant problem -- a massive sinkhole has opened up right next her to home. That hole first appeared late Wednesday, and just kept on growing.
The house has been red-tagged. The family that lived there until Friday afternoon can retrieve their belongings from the house, but only through the garage. The front door and the front of the house is strictly off-limits.
It's is a nightmare for Connie Jones and her family -- a couple of nights ago they noticed a hole that opened up just outside of their front poach. Her daughter thought that it was a gopher hole.
Connie Jones, Gardena resident: "And they told me, 'Mom, we got a gopher out there.' And I thought, okay. It was really small -- and then when my fiancee came home, it had got bigger. And that's when we called the owner."
A peek with the flashlight revealed not a gopher hole, but a cavern dropping 20-feet or more and extending under the house, leaving a portion of the foundation exposed. Deep in the hole, some type of shoring is visible. The fire chief gave ABC7
Eyewitness News a theory on what it is.
Chief Rick Moreno, L.A. County Fire: "That's a good question. From what I've heard, it appears to be some railroad ties, and possibly some type of a shaft. We'll find out in the near future I'm sure."
L.A. County firefighters peered into the hole, then called Urban Search and Rescue. With lights and small cameras, they determined that the cavern under Connie Jones' house is at least 20 feet long and 12 feet wide. They theorize it's a well or mine that was probably there before the house was built.
