What Lies Beneath Page County Sixth Graders Get Lesson On Karst, Caves By Alicia Wotring LURAY — Page County is known for its natural beauty — not only aboveground, but underneath it as well, says Jill Keihn, an environmental scientist in Luray. Beneath the surface lies a honeycomb of sinkholes and caverns, referred to as karst, explained Chris Anderson, Page County’s environmental coordinator. Though karst geology is to thank for natural beauty such as caverns, it also brings with it challenges for surface and ground water, Anderson said.
