Saturday 3 September 2005 20:06 Maritime And Coastguard Agency (South West) PORTLAND COASTGUARD COORDINATE RESCUE OF TWO MEN TRAPPED IN CAVE At half past five this evening, a 999 call was received from a lady at Beer, East Devon reporting two teenage boys waving for assistance at the Seaton end of Beer beach. The lads were cut off by the tide and the tide was rising. Portland Coastguard called out the Beer Coastguard rescue team, and requested the launch of the Lyme Regis RNLI lifeboat. When the Coastguards arrived on scene, it was quickly established that due to the inaccessibility of the location, neither the Coastguard rescue team or the lifeboat would be able to effect a rescue. The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 'Whiskey Bravo' was scrambled and arrived on scene very quickly and winched two men in their early twenties to safety, in what has been described as a very exact and delicate operation. The men were landed onto the cliff top and were uninjured. The two men aged 20 and 23 both come from Chard, Somerset. Jim Anderson, Watch Manager, Portland Coastguard said: "We would recommend that you check the tide times before exploring the coastline. The danger of a rising tide when you become trapped in an inaccessible area to rescuers speaks for itself. Fortunately, for these two men, the skill and expertise of our helicopter crews saved the day. We would also like to thank the lady who did exactly the right thing by dialling 999 and asking for the Coastguard."
