and another... Yesterday, Tim and I spent the day in Carlsbad at the Caverns. It only costs $6.00 to tour the caves and we were underground (about 750 feet) for around three hours. If you go through the natural entrance, it's a long way down. The path into the caves curves like a small intestine (or like Minas Tirith, if you prefer the poetic) so you walk twice as far to get half the distance. At the mouth of the cave, the cave swallows, themselves batlike, swoop outside the entrance. These birds take the dayshift, as the rangers call it, hunting insects in the daylight. At night, the swallows disappear into the cavern and the bats take over. The cave inside and once the natural daylight can no longer filter in, is 56 degrees Farenheit, but since there is no wind, you don't really need a jacket once inside. The cave is full of stalactites, stalagmites, speleothems, popcorn formations, cave pearls, draperies and soda straws. imaginarycanary.livejournal.com/61230.html
