I just encountered a rather disturbing glitch when I tried to modify my profile (I was playing with changing my avatar). I hit the button to modify my profile, and got this message: WHAAAAAAT?? Am I now stuck with a profile I can't edit without changing my user name? Whose DUMB idea was that?

Hey NZ, I don't think it was anyone's DUMB idea. Your display name already has caver in it. You should be able to edit your profile as far as I can see and editing your avatar has nothing to do with your user name or display name. You cannot change your user name that is in your profile, but you can change your display name, which is the name that other forum users can see beside your posts. Let me know if you are still having a problem and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for your prompt reply.
My user name and my display name are the same. I do not wish to change either of them.
I just tried this for a third and fourth time, but no dice. I go to modify profile, change only my avatar link and pixel dimensions, and hit the "modify profile" button. (My display name field is already filled in, and I leave it exactly as it is.) Same result - You may not use caver in your display name. Too late - I already do!!!
As to my somewhat blunt comment about this being a DUMB idea - that was directed at whoever decided that "caver" cannot be part of a member's display name on a CAVING forum. I assume this was a conscious change made by somebody involved with this forum, probably some time in the last year? Obviously my profile was perfectly acceptable when I first registered, otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion...
Clear as mud?

Just so others know...................It must of been some kind of technical problem, and not a decission from one of us to ban the word "caver" from someones display name. You can call yourself whatever you want, including "late for dinner".
Thanks Sharon for fixing whatever was broke.

You can call yourself whatever you want, including "late for dinner". Dan, Sharon etc - please accept my humble apologies for assuming this was intentional. You have to admit it's a most unusual technical problem - something in the forum software that identifies "caver" as a bad word. Does that make all us cavers bad people?? Thanks again for fixing the problem. Gotta go, I'm late for dinner... ;D

No problem NZ. ;D There is a bad word list of sorts that we could use to ban words. I tried playing with it a few years ago when Sharon first found this software. You can ban words or change their spelling if you want. I decided to change the spelling on a couple of four letter words. Not too long after that, we had a cave diver try and post a trip report about Peacock Springs. Much to both our amazement, the title of the post turned into Peapecker Springs! It changed the word in the middle of a word, all on it's own. . I appologized and reset the list to default, and haven't touched it again. Free software on a free server.........looks like we get free computer glitches too.
