3 August 2007 Friday
Today we decided to travel to McCreary County Kentucky to explorer a cave we had located earlier this year. The original plan was that all of the present members of SKSC to make the journey. However, my brother and nephews wasn’t able to make the trip.
I contacted the remaining members and three of the four decided we would go ahead with the trip. We left about noon and drove to the location. We had got out and began our trek up the dry creek bed towards the location. After about ten minutes we had stopped to locate a safe traverse on the rock creek bed. I remember telling Kevin to make sure the rocks on the side of the bank didn’t have any slithery guest hiding in the cracks.
While I was waiting for the go ahead from my brother, I happened to look down to my right. There among the rocks laying all coiled up and ready to strike was sure enough a slithery guest. I let a shout from being startled since I was mainly standing on top of this most unwelcome visitor. I guess it probably thought the same thing about me.
I yelled to Austin to stop and not move as I jumped to where he was grabbing him and pushing him on forward putting myself between him and the eighteen to twenty inch copper colored venomous reptile. I was so thankful that the snake decided to just lay there sunning. We contemplated destroying this creature but then decided we probably should just go on and leave it to it’s business.
After we was able to breath again, we talked about proceeding on the cave and what chance we might have of running into more limbless scaled serpents. We decided to trek back to our jeep and come again later on when maybe it is just the adults. Austin agreed as he made the remark of this being a winter cave only.
I was so hoping to look around at the new hole we had found, but decided not to take the chance of our little ones getting injured.
I guess we will have a better report next time.
Till then, keep on slithering (ha ha). Cave Hard…
