SKSC made another trip to the Sinks of the Roundstone cave in Mt Vernon Kentucky.
Objective of this trip was to find a new area in the cave they we had located last time we was in the cave system, but had ran out of time to continue exploring.
This time we where very successful in locating the Popcorn Junction room and the passage to the north of that location. We traversed up to a landing and found a small slick passageway leading down to a small watery muck filled passage. Using some rope to assist the kids in the downward trek we continued on through the small shoulder width passage for several hundred feet. According to the map this passage led underneath the railroad bed that is runs along the north side of the cave system.
We were hoping to find the girl’s scout dome listed on the map and a new exit from the cave system that is labeled on the map ‘up and out’. We found an area we think to be the up and out exit but this area will consider quite a lot of rock climbing and we didn’t think it safe for the little guys. So yet another day of caving into the Sinks of Roundstone can be seen in the near future.
We did have a blast though. This was my youngest son, Shawn’s, first trip to the Sinks. He had a great time climbing up and down the passages in the dark unexplored areas of the cave.
My helmet paid off on the traverse back up the from the area to the Popcorn Junction room. We had to use a rope to aid us in the climb back up the water slicked hill. I was the last to come up the hill and wasn’t able to climb with out the rope. I hooked in and was climbing as they pulled and lost my footing. Well needless to say, ‘Splat went my head bouncing against the side of the cave as well as my right wrist catching a foot hold and taking a nice little bend backwards.
All in all we had a nice hard day of caving. Boy did we ever sleep good that night.
