MINDEN, Nevada (AP) -- Searchers looking for Steve Fossett have come across six uncharted plane crashes, but none of the wrecks sheds light on what may have happened to the multimillionaire adventurer. Steve Fossett and his wife, Peggy, celebrate his record for nonstop airplane flight distance in February 2006. Hopes that a wrecked plane spotted Friday on the side of a hill might be Fossett's were dashed quickly when ground crews learned the plane last was registered more than three decades ago. As the search for Fossett stretched into its fifth full day Saturday, weary rescuers were no closer to understanding where he was flying or where his small plane might have gone down. Searchers tried to glean any positive news they could from the old crashes they discovered from an otherwise discouraging week. "This does give us hope. We are finding a lot of stuff we didn't know was there," Civil Air Patrol Maj. Cynthia Ryan said. www.cnn.com/2007/US/09/08/fossett.ap/index.html

RENO, Nevada (AP) -- Rescue crews searching for famed millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett stumbled upon more false leads Sunday when they discovered more plane wreckage -- but didn't find the missing aviator or his plane. Fossett poses in 2006 with the GlobalFlyer, which he flew solo around the world without refueling. "Once again, you had your hopes raised and dashed, just as we have," Nevada Civil Air Patrol Maj. Cynthia Ryan told reporters during a news conference. Rescue crews spotted two old wrecks, one of them from a U.S. Navy plane, southeast of the private ranch where Fossett was staying 80 miles southeast of Reno when he took off Monday for what was supposed to be a three-hour flight. The false alarm further dampened spirits of the rescuers, whose chances of finding the 63-year-old Fossett alive in the rugged, concealing landscape of western Nevada are becoming more and more slim. www.cnn.com/2007/US/09/09/fossett.missing.ap/index.html
