How many caver's have purchased or plan to purchase an Apple iphone? For caver's on the forum who may not have heard about this new technology yet, here is some information. The iPhone's functions include those of a camera phone, a multimedia player, and mobile phone. It also offers Internet services including e-mail, text messaging, web browsing, visual voicemail, and local "Wi-Fi" connectivity and more. www.apple.com/iphone/

We have not purchased an iPhone yet as I understand the iPhone has some activation woes. Read more on Yahoo! News

Reading up on them it is pretty cool stuff. You activate them through iTunes (the newest version) on your Mac or PC and it automatically syncs up your adress book contacts, email addresses, calendar appointments, iTunes music library (or as much of it as you want to store), and other media files depending if you are using a Mac or a PC. I read that some activation problems are happening but 80% of people are not having such problems. That's not too bad for a brand new device just going to market. Also they seem to be about sold out at stores and can be ordered online from Apple. It's pretty cool technology that can be quite useful for many of us. Let's see - it's a phone, web surfing tool, music player, movie player, 2 MB camera, data storage device, mini computer, and whatever else I haven't read about. Maybe some enterprising caver programmer will create some cave survey software that runs on one too! They need to make it tell jokes to round things out eh?

Not until it includes a foldout keyboard.
Most of the places I frequent don't have digital cell service of any sort, (only analog) nor Wifi, and no plans to get any. Eugene cannot have a camera phone because of his job (this limits us to lower tech phones). I hate subscription/DRM music. (Have an MP3 player, but have only about 0.5% DRM music-- songs I don't want to pay for the artist's CD.) Also, I hate video unless it has a real purpose (showing a dequential process which is hard to describe in words or stills.
Why should it turn the screen off when close to your face? Then we can't see it *|:-)
Oh hum...and who can afford to lose a $500 telephone?
Give me a tricorder...or nothing!

Hmmmmm, I phone..... I don't think so.... Not for my lifestyle, I don't think they would past the firefighter rigor test.
Plus the price... (I) may stand for something else... You fill in your own verb.
Never mind the fact that the starting monthly service charge here would be $60. But if you wanted to have a good business type phone, I am sure it would be worth the monthly charge. But $500 bucks would buy a lot of cave gear.... ;D

Oh I would looooooooooove an iPhone. But OUCH! The iPhone price for a 4GB model is $499 (US) and an 8GB model is $599 (US).....did I say ouch? Sorry I actually meant OUCH! I think I need a band-aid now. Plus you also have the iPhone required two-year AT&T service plan + the AT&T iTunes Activation and Sync + the one-time activation fee of $36 + the affordable service plans for iPhone which 'start' at just $59.99 per month for 450 minutes or $79.99 for 900 minutes or $99.99 for 1,350 minutes. Total Cost = Way too much for me. Meh.......I think I will just go caving.....

Well you do get 5000 night and weekend minutes for the $59 per month fee, they say the internet is free, and there are a few other perks too. It isn't perfect and it sin't cheap. But the design, packaging, and especially the new interface and controls are rather evolutionary - just as the controls are on an iPod (they sold zillions so far). I expect them to only get better with time but never cheaper. They'll add features and software but likely keep the price the same. They are too cool. Here's a few iPhone links to whet your techie appetites: gizmodo.com/gadgets/buyer.s-guide/wait-ten-things-you-should-know-before-you-buy-an-iphone-274432.phpwww.engadget.com/2007/07/03/iphone-review/Also some lucky cyber-squatter had the www.iphone.com address since 1995 and recently sold it to Apple for at least a cool million. Worth the wait? Yup!

I've found that there are already ways posted online to activate iPhones without buying into the AT&T 2 yr contract. If you search you too can find a wiki on how to use a second iPhone to activate another, turn it into a pay as you go "Go-phone" and other options. All of them are not that easy but there are alternatives to using them as AT&T wants you to. Interesting...
